General Help & FAQ

Q) What is a domain name?
A domain name is a name that allows others on the Internet to find your web site easily. Simply put, a domain name is something.com, or something.net and so on. After registering your domain name you can start to take advantage of email using your new domain. For example, you can start sending and receiving email at "yourname@yourdomain.com". No longer will you have to look unprofessional using that free email address which came standard from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Registering a domain name distinguishes yourself or your business from others on the Internet. For a complete understanding of how domain names work, please view our Getting Started Tutorials
Q) Once I register a domain name, how long will it be before it becomes active?
Once a domain name is registered it becomes active almost immediately. Remember that a domain name itself is just a name. It's useless unless you have a web site which it points to. Please view our Getting Started Tutorials for a complete understanding of domain names, email and web hosting.
Q) What do I do with my domain name once it's registered?
One of the first things you should do is to start using your domain name as your new email address. If you're planning on having a web site, then you should also signup for a Web Hosting Account. Remember that registering a domain name is the first in a series of processes. Please view our Getting Started Tutorials for a complete understanding of domain names and how they are used.
Q) How many characters can use for my new domain name?
Currently you can register domain names up to 67 characters in length (including the period and extension). Remember that the longer the domain name, the more likely it will be that someone will miss-type it. Try to keep your domain name short and easy to remember. Q) May I point my domain name to an existing web site or other domain name?
Yes. Using our Free URL Forwarding service is actually one of the most powerfull features within your Domain Name Control Panel. For example, let's assume you're a realtor. Using your domain name control panel you could redirect everyone who goes to http://www.your-domain.com to an existing web site perhaps designed by your broker. You can also create your own hostnames so that if someone goes to http://123main.your-domain.com, you could have everyone redirected to a property located at 123 Main Street. In other words, directly to the listing for that specific property. Our URL Forwarding feature is extremely powerfull, easy to use, and works instantly. Unlike others who may offer a similar service or plaster their banner ads on your web site, we include this feature free as part of all domain name registrations.
Q) Can I use spaces in a domain name?
No. All domain names must conform to domain name standards set forth by ICANN. You may however use dashes (hyphens) and numbers. Please view our Getting Started Tutorials for a complete understanding of domain names and how they are used.
Q) May I register more than one domain name?
Yes. You may register as many as you want. As a matter of fact it's to your benefit to register as many variations of your domain name as possible. For example if your domain name is promoteone.com, you would be wise to also register promote1.com and promoteone.net. Try to register every variation of your domain name especially if your domain name is easily misspelled. For more information, please view our Getting Started Tutorials.
Q) What is the difference between .com, .net, .org extensions?
Dot com (.com) domain names used to signify companies, while .net used to represent networks and .org, non-profit organizations. Nowadays anyone can register a .net or .org without proof of being a network or having NPO status. The most popular domain names are still .coms since that is what most of us are used to seeing and hearing. As stated earlier, we highly recommend protecting yourself by registering every variation of your domain name. Remember, in today's world a domain name is as, if not more important than your business license. Regardless of whether you register a .com or .net domain name, all domain names work the same way in that they all must eventually point to a web site or to another domain name in order to serve a purpose. Please view our Getting Started Tutorials for a complete understanding of domain names and how they are used.
