Modifying NameServer Information

Pointing your domain to your web hosting providers name servers (changing DNS)

  1. If you have chosen regiSTAR.com as your web hosting provider, please skip this section. Instead, click here to visit our Advanced Web Hosting Tutorials.

  2. For all others, start by contacting your web hosting provider and ask them for their Primary and Secondary name servers. This should be something like "NS1.THEIR-DOMAIN.COM" and "NS2.THEIR-DOMAIN.COM". They may also give you a set of numbers commonly known as IP addressed for each of thier name servers (Ex. 22.165.25.145). These are not necessary when using our control panel, just the names servers themselves.

  3. Login to your Domain Name Control Panel.

Please refer to "I'm having problems logging in to my Domain Name Control Panel" should you ever encounter any problems.

  4. Enter your domain name and password. Remember, your domain name does not include "www." and must include the domain extension (.com, net, etc..). In the event your password is forgotten or misplaced, please visit our Password Retreival Form to have your password emailed to you.

  5. Click on the Edit button in the "DNS Information" section.

  6. Click on the radio button entitled "Custom".

  7. Enter the name servers addresses provided to you by your web hosting provider. One name server per row. Remember to leave off any IP addresses that they may have given you. Enter just the name server addresses themselves.

  8. Click the Save button to save your changes.
Please note that name server changes usually take effect immediately. Be sure to clear your browsers' cache if you tried to resolve your domain name prior to making your name server changes.

Changing the name servers that your domain name points to is one thing. Understanding why is another. If you have not yet done so, we strongly encourage you to listen to our Getting Started tutorials.

Q) I'm getting an error message that says "Errors modifying nameservers: Invalid attribute value". What does these mean?
A) The name server you provided is invalid or not in the shared worldwide DNS registry. More than likely the name you provided is either misspelled or you used an IP Address instead of an actual name server address. Go back and check the spelling. Re-confirm with your web hosting provider that the domain name server (DNS) addresses they gave you are correct. If problems persist, please contact technical support.

Q) How long will it take for my name server changes to take effect?
A) Any changes to your name server information usually take effect immediately. Be sure to clear your web borwsers' cache if you tried to resolve your domain name prior to making your name sevrer changes. If problems persists, please contact technical support. You may also want to use our Live Help located to your left when available.

Q) Why have the changes I made just disappeared?
A) You probably forgot to save your modifications. Make certain to click on the Save button to save any changes you've made to your domain name control panel.
