Email Forwarding:

How to set up Email Forwarding

For more information on how, why and when to use Email Forwarding, please view our
Email Forwarding Tutorial. Otherwise please follow the steps below.
  1. Login to your Domain Name Control Panel.

Please refer to "I'm having problems logging in to my Domain Name Control Panel" should you ever encounter any problems.

  2. Enter your domain name and password. Remember, your domain name does not include "www." and must include the domain extension (.com, net, etc..). In the event your password is forgotten or misplaced, please visit our Password Retreival Form to have your password emailed to you.

  3. Scroll down the section entitled "Email Settings" and click the Edit button.

  4. From the pulldown, select "Email Forwarding".

  5. Click the "Add New" button.

  6. In the "Username" field specify where you want this email to forward to. This can be any valid email address.

In the example all mail sent to the domain name would be forwarded to john@yahoo.com except for "Mary". any email sent to mary@atomicjeans.com would be fowarded to mary@hotmail.com. Using the asterisks character as a username allows you to create a catch-all and intercept all email sent to the domain name, except for any other usernames you've specified. More on our new catch-all feature below.

IMPORTANT: Never use email forwarding for your primary domain name. Instead, signup for a Web Hosting Account which allows you to create POP3 email accounts for your domain name. If you don't know the difference between a POP3 email account and email forwarding, please watch to our Getting Started Tutorials.

    When to use email forwarding

Email forwarding, just like URL Forwarding should only be used on ancillary domain names. Let's assume you were smart and protected yourself by registering the .com and .net versions of your domain name. In this case it would be prudent to set up Email and URL Forwarding to redirect to the .com domain name and any POP3 email account you already have using your .com domain name. If any of this sounds confusing, it's because you probably don't have a clear understanding of the terminology. For that reason, and to get you up to speed, we strongly encourage you to watch our Getting Started Tutorials.

Using our NEW! Catch-all email account

Using the * (asterisk) character in any Username field now acts as a catch-all. For example, let's say in the Username field for Row 1 you entered an asterisk character * and in the Forward To field for that same Row, you entered the email address john@yahoo.com. This means that any email sent to the domain, will be redirected or forwarded to john@yahoo.com.

Now in the second row, let's assume you used the name mary in the Username field and mary@hotmail.com in the Forward To field. In this case John will receive all email sent to the domain name except for Mary.

But what if John also wanted to receive a carbon copy of Mary's email? In this case we would add a third row. In this new row we would specify the name "mary" again in the username field but in the Forward To field for that row we would enter John's email address (john@yahoo.com). This way John, the person with the catch-all would intercept all email sent to the domain name including emails addressed to Mary. However, Mary would only receive emails addressed to her and no one else. If Mary and John both wanted to receive all emails sent to the domain name, both would use the asterisks characters in their username fields. In other words both John and Mary would have catch-all email forwarding accounts.

Using our new catch-all feature enables you to have virtually an unlimited number or email forwarding accounts. It's also a great way to ensure you don't miss any emails sent to your ancillary domain name(s) or from someone who happened to misspell your email address.

Understanding how email works and the difference between POP3 email accounts and email forwarding, is crucial. Again, if you have not already done so, please take a moment to watch our Getting Started Tutorials.
